prisonscape3RPGs typically set themselves in a classic mythical realm. You wander across the countryside, through caves and dungeons, wielding swords, axes, and bows. Well, Prisonscape is just like that… If you think about it. In Prisonscape, you wander through your cell, break out into the halls of prison, and wield shanking tools, saws, guns, and at one point, some sort of dark magic. Seriously. Watch the promo video, there’s some dark magic in there right at the end. If this all sounds like your cup of tea, read on, because that’s just the beginning.

Prisonscape plays out like your standard RPG focused on using your surroundings to your advantage and making the most of what you find laying around. You don’t just find a gun all blinky-blinky on the ground, you have to make your own fun. 80 NPCs, personality-centered character building, an adaptive storyline, and no-holds-barred representation of prison life bring Prisonscape to life, allowing you to kill everyone you meet, barter with them, form alliances, or… Ya know… Stab people in the back with a toothbrush. SNES-inspired graphics soaked in blood and violence make for an interesting visual combination, and the level of polish in the promo video is worth noting, even at the early stage of development that Prisonscape is currently in.

prisonscape2For the oddly specific initial fundraising goal of $49,500, studio Lunar Enigma will be able to bring Prisonscape to life in all its bloody, stabby glory. The team is shooting for a December 2014 release on PC, Mac, and Linux, and is tightly budgeted to spend as much on the game as possible. While this means fewer physical reward tiers, it means a lower goal and a better game if everything is managed right, so if this seems like the game for you, go ahead and check out the Kickstarter.
