[dropcap]P[/dropcap]oint and click games have risen in popularity in the past couple of years. More specifically, in crowdfunded and indie game development particularly.  Alum is one of these many examples. Micah Orsie and his team are one of the many groups accomplishing creation of these games. With the idea of a point and click adventure with some RPG elements involved, they turned to Kickstarter to make this idea a reality.

During the summer of 2013, they took to Kickstarter in order to raise $10,000 goal for Alum. The Kickstarter campaign was successful, reaching $10,165 and 488 backers total.  The pledges had benefits such as signed posters, your name in the credits, concept art, downloads, and many more; all which have brought on a set of enthusiastic backers.

The day begins as any other day, just delivering packages. Until something happens that veers it in a different direction.

Alum is intended to be a point and click adventure with a darker, more mature story for the player while maintaining an older style of game design. The entire angle of the gameplay is questioning who is actually a reliable and trustworthy individual.

Are your interactions true or being used against you? Who is the fibber? Can I trust the person in power to protect me or are they trying to control me?

These inquiries are just the beginning.

A rebellion is starting. Many in the community are starting to rethink the Mayor's intentions.

In the world of Alum, you are a married man by the name of Alum Descry. Your form of employment is simply delivering packages throughout the city of Kosmos. Your life is relatively peaceful, simple, and it honestly seems like nothing is going to go wrong. Until Esther, your wife, is completely affected by the epidemic going around referred to as “The Vague.”

The origin is unknown. It is said to make people depressed and completely withdrawn. Within  a few weeks, they lose all traces of their personality and become more disconnected from society. As you can imagine, it is tearing Alum apart inside.  Alum is desperate to save the woman he loves dearly.

The mayor's interests with Kosmos is starting to be questioned. Does he intend to keep the people safe after all?

In the city of Kosmos, there are monsters that lurk about in the shadows. Luckily, the mayor, Mr. Glym, is looking out for the citizens. Especially with his prized creations, the E-bots, which are designed to monitor the citizens, enforce rules, and protect them from monsters.

But there is a rebellion building up beneath the city and certain officials are being questioned. Rumors are swimming around about a cure for “The Vague,” but nothing is certain. Before you know it, Alum is sucked into a conspiracy in the midst of trying to find the cure for his beloved. He has no choice but to temporarily leave his simple life behind and go an epic journey to find the truth.

In early January, the alpha for Alum was released for the backers to play. It is only the first of the many chapters of the game but it is enough to give an introduction to the character’s story and the general gameplay.

While there’s isn’t a lot additional information about Alum available, the developers recently announced that they expect to release the game this August.
