If you ask a whole generation of gamers what their first game was many will say The Legend of Zelda on the Nintendo Entertainment System. That top-down action adventure experience has informed and influenced many game developers of today. Case in point, developer Still Games have launched a Kickstarter campaign for a game with a similar basic aesthetic – Animal Gods. Of course, this isn’t just a remake of an old classic as the team have a lot in mind.

The story of Animal Gods takes place in the 15th century and stars Thistle. As Thistle, you must fight against a curse placed on creatures around you. Hopefully, you’ll be able to set the Gods of this world free. Players get a top-down perspective of a very stylized, colorful landscape. With close range weapons such as a sword (or long range bow) you’ll be well-equipped to take care of anything in your path. This can also dash in able to get out of particularly tight situations. Open world design is also an important aspect to Still Games’ design philosophy. They want their game to not just be beautiful but also offer a huge amount of exploration.

Here’s an exciting tidbit of information about the game for current Nintendo fans: Animal Gods will be coming to Wii U. It’s also worth noting that they’re already confirmed Wii U developers, meaning their funding goal of $26,000 will be funneled primarily into development itself. PC owners don’t need to fret as Animal Gods is also confirmed for Windows, Mac, and Linux machines.
