Once, humans explored the stars and galaxies beyond. Now, they’ve somehow plunged back into a medieval state. This is the basic back story for Tahira: Echoes of the Astral Empire. Tahira is a woman in Avestan’s royal family who, upon the wake of her brother’s death, becomes the only heir to the throne. With no desire to take this role, she leaves before receiving a frightening message begging for her return a year later. As skilled as she may be, Thaira is just one person, which means she’ll add people to her party to fight off an impending invasion with all she’s got.

Tahira: Echoes of the Astral Empire is a turn-based RPG with inspiration from games such as Fire Emblem and XCOM. Battles themselves are set to range from small skirmish to much more dire situations. What most captures folks’ attention when checking out this campaign page though is not its solid fighting mechanics – it’s the art style. Backgrounds are hand painted and, more noticeably, character animations are all rotoscoped (which is where you paint over video of real people frame by frame). These intriguing design decisions ensures that Tahira looks like no other game out there.

This is a very impressive Kickstarter pitch by the three man development team of Whale Hammer Games. Because of that, this campaign is to fund the first episode of the game. So far, they’re planning Tahira : Echoes of the Astral Empire to have a two episode season. The funding goal of $68,000 AUD (about $52,900) will bring episode 1 to Windows, Mac, and Linux. A successful Greenlight campaign shall get it on Steam.
