Visual novels come in all shapes and sizes but I have yet to see one with a Mafia bent. Until now, that is. Just launched on IndieGogo is Void, a tale about organized crime and the quest for vengeance against wrongdoings. By infiltrating “The Syndicate”, our protagonist finds himself thrust into the seedy underbelly of the mob. Sounds like a lot of fun, don’t it? Seriously, though, this seems to be the right amount of dark mixed with a dash of humor that just might work.

Void

In Void, you play as Arthur Woods. The Syndicate took his girlfriend’s life and to get some major payback he decides to join them and rises through the ranks to get revenge from the inside. To take on the monster you need to become one, so they say. And Arthur certainly is willing to play the part. How this affects him and the people around him remains to be seen as little else is given about the plot.

Void

If you’re looking for one of them silly dating sims you’ve clicked on the wrong link. If you’re wanting something more mature and edgy then you’ve come to the right place. While there’s some comedy to be had, Void is all about dealing with dark themes. And Arthur’s not alone in his quest. Along the way he’ll meet a vigilante with a dark past, an enigmatic girl with perhaps more to hide than she lets on, and a wannabe playboy fellow who goes to school with our main man. The academic life is nothing but a cover story but who knows how it’ll play out in the end?

I love a good visual novel, no matter the subject matter. And seeing one that’s more dark and brooding is actually a breath of fresh air from all of the dating sims out there. I look forward to seeing where Vifth Floor takes this one.
