Ever since I was young one of the many games that I would spend countless hours playing on my old Atari ST was a first person dungeon crawler called, appropriately, Dungeon Master. I still have fond memories of this title to this day and whenever another title comes along to pay homage to it and its kin I have to stop to look. In this case it’s an interesting take on the genre called The Rise of Dagon. And it looks beautiful.
For those that don’t know, this is a rare style of first person RPG in which you’re running through some building or cavern or whatever being hunted by various nefarious creatures all the while trying not to fall into some trap or another, usually littered with them as if the owner is paranoid about insurance salesmen or something. But, what exactly sets The Rise of Dagon apart from its older brethren? Honestly it doesn’t look like much, but this is such a rare genre to see the light of day it’s on this premise alone that I’m sorely tempted to pledge to the Kickstarter.
They are asking for a good amount of money, in the number of $200,000 and change, so it’s going to be an uphill battle making funding in the four weeks or so that’s on the clock. That said, I really do hope that they make it as just looking at the assets provided brings me back to my childhood that I want to experience again. Sure, there have been a couple recently released, but The Rise of Dagon for some reason looks special and it’s one that I want to see make it. Whether it does or not I do hope to see it release one way or another in the future.
