Do you remember when Double Fine hit Kickstarter a few years ago and ushered in a great deal of notable developers to the service? It appears we’re in the second wave of established creator crowdfunding with recent campaigns such as ToeJam and Earl: Back in the Groove and Descent: Underground. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Today behemoth PC game developer Strategic Simulations, Inc. (SSI for short) are back. They’ve got a new name – Tactical Simulations Interactive – but their skill remains unchanged. SSI was best known for its RPGs such as the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons video game series, among many other RPGs and strategy titles.
TSI’s debut game is Seven Dragon Saga which just launched on Kickstarter. This is an RPG in the vein of classics where you have complete control over your team members, engage in turn-based combat, and can spec each character out as you see fit. A neat little tweak to this whole formula is, upon creating a new character, you assign goals alongside typical traits. Goals affect the team after completing quests. Players are presented with choices which, if aligned with character goals, will give those characters a boost. Of course, this means sometimes you might receive no bonus at all.
Although it appears TSI has a prototype build of Seven Dragon Saga available (just check out the funding video from minute 2 onward) they have not yet released a playable demo. With that said, it may not be necessary if name recognition proves enough. Seven Dragon Saga is asking for $450,000 on Kickstarter so we’ll be sure to keep you posted on any big updates.
