Video games are a wonderful means of transportation for players to experience different worlds and concepts. Unfortunately, so many titles tend to focus on the same few “safe” concepts again and again. Thanks to Kickstarter we’ve been able to see distinct new titles arriving, and more recently, ones focused on sharing different cultures and mythologies. One recent example is Beneath Floes, but that already found funding success. Now it’s Mulaka’s turn at bat. Mulaka is an upcoming 3D game which is inspired by the mythology of the Rarámuri. The Tarahumara tribespeople are still out there today, and developer Lienzo hopes to share their beautiful stories with a larger audience.
Mulaka will provide action-centered gameplay alongside puzzles. Players take on the role of a young man named Mulaka who, of course, must save the world. His weapons fit in with the culture, which means he’ll be able to wield items like spears and an atlatl. However, you’ll be able to utilize more than brute force as the protagonist is also a Sukurúame, or shaman. With this power he can view the world through a different lens – one that shows off secrets and help with puzzles. However, everything isn’t for the better. You might also encounter a mythical monster!
The Kickstarter campaign for Mulaka is currently focused squarely on a PC (presumably Windows-exclusive) release. That’s as long as they reach the goal of $77,000. Although not specified just yet, Lienzo has PS4, Xbox One, and Wii U ports as potential stretch goals.
