diablowing3Diablowing looks like a lot of fun, and it’s great to see Kickstarters with decent gameplay front and center, and if early beta footage can make me want to play a game, something’s gone horribly, horribly right. So, what happens when a developer takes classic roguelike elements like looting, leveling up, and customizing your gear and mashes them into a top-down bullet-hell package? Well, apparently, Diablowing happens. I’m okay with that.

diablowing2Diablowing is you average, vertically scrolling shooter with messes of missiles, frenzies of fire, loads of lasers, and bunches of bullets going just all over the place, but when you take what already appears to be a solid shooter and add RPG elements, things become a bit more interesting. You start up Diablowing, name your character, pick a class, and start blowing the living Susan out of hundreds upon thousands of other planes, collecting gear to modify your ship. Each class has different numbers of different slots, and each weapon behaves a little differently from the last, with a great pool of gear to add to armors, modules, and three weapon classes. A basic four-stat RPG system is used, and you can level up your individual attributes as you progress. Graphics are crisp and clean, and gameplay appears to provide a balanced challenge that encourages experimentation.

Diablowing is currently seeking funding on Kickstarter, with an extremely open development cycle to allow the backers to directly impact the game as much as the developers can allow. Diablowing will be made available for PC, Mac, and Linux, with a separate version being made especially for Android upon meeting the £12,000 initial goal.
