I love me a good card game, especially when it’s not just your run-of-the-mill Magic: The Gathering clone. Sure, I love standard CCGs but sometimes I just want something a little different. Particularly when it comes to a video game. And while it certainly has captured my interest I don’t see a whole lot in the pitch to get me to back Game of Dragons. That said, I do really love the concept and I’d love to see more shown off than what has been so far. With two months on the clock, they’ve got plenty of time to sell me on the game.

Game of Dragons

Game of Dragons is a hybrid game that features turn based and real-time strategy RPG elements that appears to blend well with their proposed card system. And everything looks like it’s done with cards. From the combat, obviously, to the overland travel you’ll be playing cards as you wander the map accepting quests and taking on monsters of all types. From the couple of videos shown it looks like you can walk without playing cards but they’ll certainly help speed things along. I’m not a huge fan of the tile based movement system but it’s something that just comes with using cards to move hexes.

Game of Dragons

Despite the concept having piqued my interest there are few things about the campaign that has me wary about backing it. The biggest issue is that this is the third attempt in back-to-back campaigns and the first two barely got any funding and between them there was a total of one update talking about Game of Dragons being Greenlit. Normally I wouldn’t have any problems with multiple attempts but if the development team can’t be bothered to put out the occasional update that alone sends up red flags. The asking amount, while lowered slightly, is still a lot to ask for. I want to see this one succeed but I don’t see it getting anywhere near what they’re asking without upping their game a bit.
