I’ll be perfectly honest with you, when I first saw the original Himeko Sutori campaign I wrote it off. The campaign page didn’t seem too compelling and was awfully short in my opinion. So I moved on and banished it from my mind and was fairly surprised to see it again. That’s right, a second campaign has been launched, this time, it has a slightly lower goal of $10k, but is it better?

Like the previous one, it just doesn’t grab me. Sometimes I read Kickstarter pages and I can almost hear the audible crackle of the developer’s excitement. I don’t feel that with Himeko Sutori, I almost feel like the language is stiff. It reminds me of times when I’m forced to write about myself in the third person for bios and such, resulting in insane levels of awkwardness. However, to give credit where credit is due, looking at the actual mechanics of the game it sounds fun. Once you grit your teeth and get through most of the Kickstarter page you realize it’s a cool fantasy story with 100 unique characters to use.

Himeko Sutori

I do think this second campaign is an improvement on the first, but I’m still on the fence about it.

It’s the type of game where you move a unit around a bit like Dune or Ravenmark, but it has a twist! It appears you can select different classes of fighter together. When you select a rival your team will attack different enemies on that square based on their own specifications (Closest, weakest, strongest etc) which sounds neat. You can also get characters to switch class to help them gain experience in other shared fields. I play a lot of these strategy games and I can’t think of any with that mechanic. I’m vaguely reminded of the class system from Final Fantasy XIV where certain moves learned from one class can be imported into other classes.

Himeko Sutori

Personally, It’s one I would buy rather than back. I was a little put off by the lack of a demo despite the fact alpha access is one of the rewards. I really feel like a demo could have sold it to me a lot better than reading the Kickstarter has. That’s just my two cents though, why don’t you check it out and tell me what you think of Himeko Sutori? I’d love to know what the name actually means!
