Change! Kickstarter Visual Novel Plays with Gender

The visual novel genre is full of fun romance-focused games targeted at men and women. In particular, the otome genre intends to draw in hetero women with promises of handsome men wanting to date their avatar. Change! looks to shake up that formula a bit by offering an otome game where the protagonist mysteriously becomes a boy on her 17th birthday. It might be a pretty fanciful start but one certainly has to wonder how romances might play out.

As players work through Change! they will make a variety of choices leading them down the road with one of four romantic interests. Three of said romantic options are men and one is a woman. Again, this strays from expected conventions, but it exciting to hear! In an unexpected way it seems like a great deal of people might be able to enjoy this game’s take on romance. Of course, that all depends on how it is handled in the final version.

Meowl Game Company is a Vietnamese indie developer who is very enthused by the prospect of creating their first otome visual novel. It seems that this genre isn’t tremendously well represented in that region, but they hope by coming to Kickstarter they can appeal to the worldwide otome audience. If successful, Change! will come to PC via Windows, Mac, and Linux for free. A paid version would include a few bonuses, such as additional CG art. They’ve also prepared a gameplay demo (in English and Vietnamese) to give folks a taste of Change!
