Inside The World Of Uplift
By Julie Morley
[divider]Uplift began as a mobile game project some time back intended to bring the nostalgic gameplay of classic games to mobile devices. Now Uplift is becoming a larger game, intended to reach computer players. A demo is available to play only for android devices. It will be available on PC, MAC, and Linux.
He’s just an innocent, hardworking Green Caster minding his own business on Kama, a desert planet run by the Red Stratocracy when he was taken from his beloved village, forced to travel across the universe on dangerous missions for them but under the guarantee of his return. Ra is completely uprooted from his home and forced to explore the universe after he looks over a meteorite that has fallen near his village.
As for the background of the game, Ra is a caster, meaning that he relies on his magical abilities to combat anything. As he is exploring the universe, his knowledge of spells will expand. The Green race has magical abilities that simply manifest as an electrical current at hand but with time and discipline, a more skilled individual could muster the ability to project through spells. Unfortunately, Ra is a bit of a novice so the magical variety initially is expected to be small.
However, it appears that things are not going to be oriented around action and combat per say but rather puzzle and curiosity oriented.
The story seems to be completely driven by the different races that reside throughout the planetary system that Ra is exploring and their history. Ra is a green alien. The Greens species are known for their primitive, simplistic nature and being completely oblivious to what is going on beyond their planet. Think of them as the hobbits of Uplift. Come on, they all live clustered together in small villages.
The galaxy is completely under the mass control of the Red Stratocracy’s army. They are technologically advanced with a massive army that would strike fear in anyone’s heart. Reds are known for being aggressive and constantly searching for an unknown enemy. I have to admit, these characters seem to be a bit fishy to me. It seems like they have a strong part of the story and Ra’s mission to explore.
Lastly, we have the Pinks. A long time ago, they were considered the civilization and species that was on top of things. Not only were they known for technological innovation but mysterious nature. Pinks are a lost civilization that left the universe completely without much reason known today. Spread throughout the galaxy, there are plenty of ruins and clues to give a general impression of what happened but it’s still a grand mystery.
I suspect that the game is driven around this mystery and Ra putting together the truth that has long been swept under the rug about the pink’s mysterious disappearance and suspicious Red Stratocracy behavior.
The Kickstarter campaign for Uplift is to end April 19th with a funding goal of £8K. Currently, Bearwaves has raised roughly £650.
