Steel Assault hit Kickstarter in January of this year and looked like a lovely homage to classic 2D action games such as Batman and Shatterhand. They succeeded in their funding effort, and even were Greenlit for Steam, but since March there were no backer updates posted. That is, until this month’s ominously titled “State of Steel Assault” post.

Steel Assault is an old-school style action platformer that's strictly NES style.

Why have the development team been quiet? Aside from making slower than expected progress with the game, they stated they’re “undertaking a kind of retooling of the game.” What does this entail specifically? Here are their three big changes:

  • A more inspired and unique game
  • A more atmospheric and cohesive world
  • Changing the scope of the game… not down, but sideways

They want to make Steel Assault a game that is more than just the sum of its inspirations. They also want to provide an intense amount of detail to the surroundings. This aspect has forced them to go from 10 stages to 7, because those 7 stages will include so much more detail than initially planned.

Steel Assault is an old-school style action platformer that's strictly NES style.

With these changes in mind, they still intend to release Steel Assault in the same time frame so keep an eye out for this game around May 2016.
