Space shooters were the norm in the early days of the arcades, almost to the point of over-saturation. However, none can discount the impact of iconic greats like Space Invaders, Asteroids and Galaga.

Now imagine throwing all of those into a blender, along with action-RPG elements found in games like Shadowrun Returns, and you get the epic awesomeness that is Fabular: Once Upon a Spacetime.

Launched on May 10th, 2016, developer Spiritus Games has already amassed over $4,000 in pledges from 172 backers. For those who have been looking for a little more depth to the “standard” space shooter, Fabular: Once Upon a Spacetime promises to deliver the goods and then some.

fabular1Players are able to select a ship from various classes that excel in speed, power and energy respectively. Space battles aren’t your standard “pew pew pew” fare, but rather sweat-inducing slug-fests that are dictated by how tricked out your ship is.

For those who enjoy story-driven narratives and upgrades as seen in the aforementioned Shadowrun Returns, you won’t be disappointed either. Your in-game interactions help flesh out the story and develop your character as you progress, and ship upgrades help shore up your offensive when the drek hits the fan.

For fans of classic SHMUPs with gigantic boss ships, Fabular has featured what appears to be a gigantic boss ship in their trailer.

fabular5Throw in some epic music, and you have yourself a procedurally generated, space-themed throw-down that will tickle the senses of new and old school SHMUP fans alike.
