If you look at the history of Kickstarter you’ll find a few game types that tend to do well on the platform.  Roguelikes, Metroidvanias, and Survival games seem to do disproportionately well on the platform; especially compared to the likes of first person shooters and flight sims.  Given that we’re in the creepy dead of October it only seems fitting that get a new survival sim to back, and boy does this one look like it may be worth backing.

Impact Winter is a post-apocalyptic survival game that takes place in Canada’s frozen hellscape that’s actually gotten worse thanks to an asteroid hitting earth and setting off a new ice-age.  Players control Jacob Soloman, an Average Joe survivor, as he leads a group of survivors holed up in an old church.  Using a variety of skills and special abilities Jacob and his crew will have to keep their spirits up, their stomachs full, their hands warm, and their body meat out of the bellies of hungry bears for at least 30 days; which is when help will arrive. Or so we’re led to believe.

impactwinter1Impact Winter is unlike the other “Canadian apocalypse” survival games out there such as Kona, and The Long Dark, in that it’s played from a top-down view similar to the original Fallout Series.  Combined that with the heavy emphasis on teamwork, its futuristic tech, and a very cool sounding tech tree and you’ve got a game with a basic premise that’s becoming common, but whose execution sounds entirely unique.  At this point Impact Winter is definitely a game to watch; one that people will obsess over and lose countless hours to.  The only questions remaining are who exactly is on the team, can they hit their £95,000 Kickstarter goal, and is this all too good to be true?
